Chapter 8

I'd gotten home in time to put Zoe to bed and to indulge us both in a bedtime story and a long snuggle. Then I retreated to my bedroom and called Daniel.

"Any luck with Sara?" he asked.

"Yes and no," I said. "She doesn't want to get involved, refused to look at the photos, and she thinks that if we catch the killer we should pin a medal on her."

"You think it's a woman?"

“Don’t you? For one thing, there weren't any men in the operating suite."

“You said yes and no. You haven’t told me the yes part yet,” Daniel said.

“It seems that early in the marriage Wesley had an affair with a woman named Ellie and they had an illegitimate daughter together named Valerie. She’s probably about twenty now.”

“Now that is interesting and worthy of follow-up,” Daniel said. “Thanks. Are you busy Saturday?"

"What do you have in mind?" I asked.

"The coroner's released Wesley's body to the family. The services are going to be on Saturday. I thought it might be valuable to see who shows up. How about I take you to the funeral and afterwards I take you to bed? I’m off duty.”

I gathered he'd caught up on his sleep. "I’m not on call either. Why don't we just skip the funeral," I said. "It's not my kind of foreplay."

“Sorry,” Daniel said. “You’ve got to eat your vegetables before you get dessert.”

Daniel was in his office, reviewing the copies he’d obtained of the personnel files of everyone who’d been in the OR that night. The file on Dr. Venning contained a photograph, which looked as though it had been taken by a professional photographer and was more like a cover shot for People Magazine than a mug shot for an application. Adrianne's elegant face with its tawny mane of hair stared up at him. If Wesley had been sexually involved with any of the four women, surely it had been the anesthesiologist. According to the application she was thirty-three years old and married. Neither the name of her husband, nor the date of the marriage, were noted. She'd been born and educated in New York, and after completing her anesthesia residency had spent two years at Darby Community Hospital in Connecticut. She'd moved to Los Angeles three years ago, obtained a California license and a job at West Beverly. He wondered what her motive had been for abandoning her east coast roots and moving west, a man perhaps? He'd have to find out who her husband was and how long they'd been together. It seemed unlikely she'd known Wesley at any time prior to moving to Los Angeles but he wondered if she'd been the woman he'd been planning to meet at Spago.

Martha Wells' photo was ten years old. In the interim her face had sagged and her hair had turned gray. According to her initial application she'd been born in 1960, which made her fifty, and had gone to nursing school from 1982 to 1986 at Martin Luther King Hospital in Watts.
